1. PayPal Reserves: An overview

1.1. What are PayPal account Reserves?

Account reserve in PayPal is a specific amount of money PayPal asks you to set aside within your PayPal account to ensure your capacity to meet potential liabilities arising from chargebacks, claims, or bank reversals, particularly when no other funds are available.

Although the reserved amount still belongs to you, it is temporarily inaccessible for use, including withdrawals.

Typically, in the event of a chargeback or dispute, the reserved amount will be deducted from your available balance. However, should your business cease operations or discontinue processing PayPal payments, any existing reserve may be utilized to cover future payment reversals.

1.2. How many types of PayPal Reserves are there?

PayPal employs the three following Reserve types that may be applied to your account.

PayPal Reserve Definitions Examples
Jumpstart Reserve Jumpstart Reserves are the amounts PayPal retains from a Merchant’s available balance immediately (when the reserve is applied). For example: if PayPal decides to retain a Jumpstart Reserve amount of USD 10,000 and the Merchant holds USD 20,000 in their PayPal account, PayPal will transfer USD 10,000 for reserves immediately.
Minimum Reserve Minimum Reserves are the minimum amounts PayPal retains from a Merchant’s reserve balance. PayPal can take a percentage of transaction amounts until the reserve reaches the minimum amount or remove funds from the avai For example: 5% of a Merchant’s daily transaction amount will be retained until the Reserve reaches USD 5,000, or this amount will be transferred from the available balance into the reserve balance all at once.
Rolling Reserve Rolling Reserves are the amounts PayPal retains for each transaction with a fixed percentage rate for a set amount of time. The funds are returned to Merchants in a corresponding schedule to the time they were reserved. This is the most common Reserve type. For example: When a Merchant’s Rolling Reserve is set at 10% and retained for 90 days, PayPal will place 10% of each transaction amount to the Reserve balance and transfer it into the available balance 90

PayPal can use all of the above Reserve types. In some cases, if you - the Merchant - have a monthly transaction volume limitation, revenues exceeding the threshold volume will also be transferred to the Reserve.

In the end, no matter what your PayPal account Reserves are, these reserves serve as a protective measure to safeguard both merchants and PayPal users from potential financial risks.

1.3. Why does PayPal create different Reserve types?

Generally, Reserves act as “deposits” for PayPal to protect buyers if the Merchant’s account has problems. Usually, the riskier the business activities, the larger such deposits. Reserve amounts help PayPal accounts run more stably.

1.4. How does PayPal determine the Reserve type for your account?

The establishment and adjustment of reserves are conducted through a process known as underwriting. PayPal will undergo periodic evaluations of your account to determine the status of the reserve:

Some key criteria are taken into account to conclude the type and amount of reserves for your PayPal account. These include:

  • Risk of the Merchant’s business lines and products
  • Strength of transaction history between the Merchant and PayPal
  • Merchant’s personal/business credit history
  • Merchant’s chargeback/refund requests
  • Rate of complaints/disputes from the Merchant’s buyers
  • Number of pre-order products or services (advance orders)
  • Delivery times
